Screen Printing

What is screen printing?

Screen printing is a printing form that has an old history and it is a low-cost method for bigger quantity jobs. It is a printing method in which a thick paste ink is forced through a stencil attached to a finely woven mesh screen, transferring ink to the desired substrate in areas which is not covered by the stencil.
In this method the number of colors matters for the price range however the setup cost does not let this method be a good printing way for smaller order jobs.Elzit Screen Printing Service
Screen Printing first appeared in China during the Song Dynasty and it was developed by creating newer methods in Japan. It was late 18th century, that screen printing came to Europe from Asia, but did not gain large acceptance.

Screen printing, also known as silk screening, is a printing technique that involves transferring ink or other materials onto a surface through a mesh screen. It is a versatile and widely used method for printing images, designs, and patterns on various objects, such as textiles, posters, stickers, signage, and more.

The screen printing process involves several steps:

Design Preparation: The first step is to create or prepare the design that will be printed. This can be done digitally using graphic design software or by hand drawing the design on a transparent film or paper.

Screen Preparation: A fine mesh screen, usually made of polyester or nylon, is stretched tightly over a frame. The mesh is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion or a stencil film. The design is then transferred onto the screen by exposing it to light, which hardens the emulsion or film, creating a stencil.

Setup: The screen is mounted onto a printing press or a frame, and the surface to be printed on is prepared by cleaning and securing it in place.

Ink Application: Ink is applied to the screen in the desired colors using a squeegee. The screen is positioned over the printing surface, and the ink is forced through the open areas of the stencil onto the surface below. The squeegee is moved across the screen, pushing the ink through the mesh.

Printing Process: The screen is carefully lowered onto the printing surface, and the squeegee is pulled across it with consistent pressure to ensure proper ink coverage. This process is repeated for each color in the design, with each color requiring a separate screen.

Drying and Curing: Once the printing is complete, the printed object needs to be dried or cured depending on the type of ink used. This can be done through air drying or by using a heat source, such as a conveyor dryer or a heat press.

Screen printing is popular because it allows for vibrant and durable prints, even on a wide range of materials. It is commonly used in the production of apparel, including T-shirts, hoodies, and jerseys, as well as promotional items, posters, and other printed materials.

What are the advantages of screen printing compared to other printing methods?

Screen printing offers several advantages compared to other printing methods. Here are some key advantages of screen printing:

Durability: Screen prints are known for their durability and resistance to fading, making them suitable for long-lasting applications such as outdoor signage, apparel, and promotional items.

Vibrant Colors: Screen printing allows for vibrant and opaque colors to be applied to various substrates. The ink used in screen printing is typically thicker, resulting in bold and vibrant prints that stand out.

Versatility: Screen printing can be used on a wide range of materials, including fabric, paper, plastic, glass, metal, and more. This versatility makes it a preferred choice for printing on diverse surfaces.

Customization: Screen printing allows for high levels of customization. It can accommodate intricate and detailed designs, including fine lines, gradients, and halftones. It also offers the flexibility to print on different sizes and shapes.

Cost-effective for Large Runs: Screen printing becomes more cost-effective when producing large quantities of prints. Once the screens are set up, the cost per unit decreases, making it an economical choice for bulk orders.
